Re: Since everybody from JJK had fun in the fall
When an individual doesn't perform up to par,the team loses the title. These individuals have to be on par to earn the points required for not just themselves but the squad. It is tougher IMO because there is so much individual pressure on them to carry their weight and not fail the team. BTW: Because the 6 that you listed vary from tennis and wrestling,it sure doesn't make them the "big 6". Like I said before tennis is a much bigger sport than volleyball. We can debate it forever, but at the end of the day, they are in the trophy case as TEAM titles, and we have 23 of 'em.
Re: Since everybody from JJK had fun in the fall
Tennis maybe a bigger known sport professionally, but not in HS or college. In tennis, if you are really that great, you play professionally during your HS years, not after going to college. I have never seen a college tennis match on TV for men or women but I have seen the vball college final four.
Re: Since everybody from JJK had fun in the fall
Those are the six big sports, if you don't believe it look at attendance and funding for those six sports compared to other ones at both the high school and college level. To me thats not really debatable, in fact wrestling programs at colleges have been dropping like flies over the last 10-20 years.

Alot of that (attendence/funding) has alot to do with the region that you live in. You know that as well as I do. It is not uncommon up North to see as many folks at a high school wrestling match as we do a high school football game here. That's not really an accurate argument friend. You have to remember where we are.
Re: Since everybody from JJK had fun in the fall
It's very accurate, Southwest Virginia has the two strongest high school wrestling programs arguably in the entire state in Grundy and Christiansburg, not to mention the success Kelly has had over the years. Yet, the following "local" schools do not offer wrestling at the collegiete level, UVa-Wise, King, Virginia Intermont, Milligan, Bluefield, Pikeville, Emory and Henry, Carson Newman, ETSU, Montreat, Union, Eastern Kentucky, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Thats off the top of my head, the closest school that I even know of that competes in wrestling is VT. It's just not a big sport, to say otherwise is ignoring the facts, you can say it's geographical, and it's true that by and large the majority of schools that wrestle are in the state of PA but that would be like saying I don't think lax is big due to my geographic location. You could even make an argument imo, that Lax is a more popular sport overall in this country than wrestling at this point.
Re: Since everybody from JJK had fun in the fall
Again you are mentioning alot of locals (colleges who don't offer wrestling in an area where wrestling isn't big) in that last post. To say that most of the wrestling schools are in PA is also inaccurate. Most of your powerhouses are from Iowa,Oklahoma,Maine,Alabama, and the state of Ohio has seen a recent boom. If you want to see how big wrestling is up north, just go to the Agie Skeens tourney at Grundy.
Re: Since everybody from JJK had fun in the fall
King and Carson Newman both have wrestling programs.
Re: Since everybody from JJK had fun in the fall
Wow, do they really? Who do they wrestle? If so I stand corrected. Unchained, what I was trying to say is that most of the smaller schools up north have wrestling, you wont see that many other places. I don't see how wrestling isn't really popular here either, I've never met anyone from Grundy who didn't think it was the greatest sport ever invented. However, if you want to continue to claim wrestling and tennis are major sports go ahead, but the numbers simply say that it isn't. I looked it up there are around 90 NCAA Division 1 Wrestling programs, 14 are in the state of PA. More than any other state.
Re: Since everybody from JJK had fun in the fall
King does have wrestling and Carson Newman does not, I should've looked King up, they'll try anything.

I also do not see volleyball being a bigger or tougher sport than tennis (pretty sure I don't see volleyball matches on CBS). Both sports require a body running their arses off and working hard to stay in shape. We can debate the point, but when it comes down to cases, nobody can lay claim to be a more well-rounded athletic school than the crew from Birchfield (heck,we even won one in theater just to prove how smart/sharp we were lol)
I have come to realize that swimming the 5000m race in swimming is more difficult and demanding than any other sporting event. In fact being a competitive swimmer, by far and away the most difficult sporting event followed up by soccer.
